  7.     When ASTER AWEKE first arrived in America, she studied
  8. computers because her family "wanted me to be educated."
  9. Ethiopia's No. 1 pop vocalist, she missed singing so much that
  10. after only six months, it was bye-bye bytes. Though she
  11. performs only in her native Amharic, her new album of
  12. impassioned tunes is catching on. Aweke, 31, who has been
  13. living outside Washington for the past eight years, "wouldn't
  14. have been disappointed about not selling records here." She
  15. never expected to have a U.S. following because she thought
  16. "nobody would  understand me." Music is one language that needs
  17. no translation.
